The interim Canada Dental Benefit aims to alleviate dental expenses for qualifying families earning less than $90,000 annually, with a focus on parents or guardians covering dental care for children under 12 without private insurance.
If you’re 65 years or older, you might qualify for enrollment in the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Individuals aged 70 and above can anticipate receiving application instructions via mail by March 2024. For those between 65 and 69, the online application process will be available starting in May 2024.
The benefit covers various dental treatments for children, including examinations, cleanings, fillings, root canal treatment, tooth removals, and even orthodontics.
The program started on December 1, 2022, covering expenses retroactively from October 1, 2022.
Parents or guardians must apply through the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) website, providing details such as the child’s dental care provider, appointment dates, and employer information. They need to confirm their child lacks private dental care coverage and will have out-of-pocket expenses. Health Canada and the CRA collaborate on a platform for timely benefit delivery.

General dentists, denturists, and dental hygienists can provide dental care for children.
While the federal government primarily influences dental care policies, Ontario offers several publicly funded programs, including those for individuals with disabilities, low-income families, seniors, and certain newcomers.
