IFHP

Urgent dental care with the IFHP.

We accept the Interim Federal Health Program, the Government of Canada’s temporary health coverage for refugees, refugee claimants, protected persons and certain other groups in Canada.

Who the IFHP covers

The IFHP gives temporary health coverage until you qualify for provincial health insurance. You may be covered if you are:

  • A refugee claimant
  • A resettled refugee
  • A protected person
  • Part of another group the Government of Canada has made eligible

The Government of Canada sets these rules and can change them. Medavie Blue Cross runs the program and can confirm your eligibility at 1-888-614-1880.

What the IFHP covers

IFHP dental coverage is for urgent care, when you have pain, an infection or an injury. That can include:

Emergency exams
An exam to find the cause of your pain, swelling or injury.
X-rays
The X-rays needed to diagnose the problem.
Pain and infection
Treatment to relieve pain and control infection.
Extractions
Removing a tooth that can’t be saved.

Routine check-ups, cleanings, cosmetic treatment and braces usually aren’t covered. We’ll confirm what your coverage includes before we start.

What you pay

Urgent dental care is a supplemental benefit under the IFHP:

The IFHP pays 70%
We bill Medavie Blue Cross directly for the IFHP’s share.
You pay 30%
You pay your share to us at your visit. We’ll tell you the amount first.

If you also qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan, the IFHP pays first for urgent care, and the CDCP may help with the rest.
