Periodontal disease affects the gum tissue and bone that supports your teeth. It’s caused by infections and inflammation from bacteria. This is why it’s important to brush your teeth twice daily followed by flossing and rinsing with mouthwash one a day. Bacteria turns into plaque that is hard to remove on your own which will eventually turn into tartar and form even below your gum line.
When it becomes more serious (periodontitis), gum and bone loss can set in, causing your teeth to become sore and possibly loose. Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.
If you’re noticing things like bad breath that won’t go away, red, swollen or tender gums, or sensitivity or pain while you’re eating, you may have early signs of gingivitis and should visit our dental office right away.
Before gingivitis turns into periodontal disease, there are a few things that can be done to reverse early signs such as brushing and flossing more regularly and effectively and visiting our dentist on a more regular basis as well. While we typically suggest visiting us every six months, in the case of periodontal disease, we’ll request that you see us more often than that.
There are certain factors that can put you more at risk of developing periodontal disease. While the most obvious factor includes poor oral hygiene, others include things like diabetes, smoking, immunodeficiencies, certain medications, having crooked teeth, and even stress.
This is why it’s important to put the proper prevention methods in place before it has a chance to worsen, especially if you have a bacterial infection that can quickly spread. Having a healthy smile is key to having good overall health, so let’s work together to make that happen.
This is done to remove plaque and tartar that have formed below your gum line. One of the most obvious signs that you may need this is bleeding gums every time that you floss. This deep cleaning method will help your gums reattach to the tooth properly. If left untreated, you can suffer from bone and tooth loss.
If you’ve suffered tooth loss, there are still options for you. Dental implants are a long-lasting and natural-looking solution to replacing an entire tooth from the root up. A titanium screw will be surgically attached to your jawbone and a dental crown placed on top. You’ll need to undergo other periodontal treatment before this step.
